Chickenhawk - Someone who is now too old to serve in the armed forces, who supported the war in Vietnam, or currently supports the war in Iraq, or who chose not to serve in the military when he was younger (and eligible to serve). Think Vice President Cheney, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham, almost every man over 41 years of age on President Bush's staff, and all of the men in President Bush's immediate family, with the exception of his father.

Yellow Elephant - Someone who is eligible for military service and supports a war as long as someone else fights it. Yellow Elephants can still change their minds. Think Michelle Malkin, and other young Hawks of her ilk.

Be A REAL American, Enlist now!!!

Interesting.....

What about those of us who were young enough (once) to enlist and tried but were rejected from military service due to medical reasons?

Noble intentions fused with action, but thwarted in the end...

Gunfighter said...

Those with intent facing ineligibility don't fit in with those that would send other people to fight for something that they themselves claim to believe in... but are too chickenshit, or self-important to do themselves.

What about thsoe of us who didn't even think about it when we were younger, still wouldn't consider it even though we could, but strongly support our SO's who do serve??

Folks, I'm pretty sure Bill is being sarcastic. But it is difficult to take war supporters who have made absolutely no personal sacrifice (themselves or through a loved one) in the process.

What I really can't stand are legislators who have no problem sending OTHER people's children into those war zones, but would do everything imaginable to keep their own children from serving. As I would do... but I don't support the war and I wouldn't EVER vote to send anyone's children over there.

You're kidding, right? You don't really really really think that a person must enlist to be a REAL American, do you?

I couldn't agree more that those who can fight, and support this war, should be signed up and ready to go. The fact that a certain former Governor of a certain New England state said his FIVE healthy sons shouldn't have to fight since their service to their country is getting him elected president just made me sick to my stomache.

Sick. To. My. Stomache.

And I DID not vote for him as Governor.

So I agree to GF's call to action. Sign up all you war-lovers. Of if you are too old sign up your children or grandchildren. After all, this is a just war.

Isn't it?

No. Sorry. I do not believe for a minute that every person in this nation is suited to be running to the cause of the war. And that is a very UN-American message, in my opinion.

And I say shame on every single one of you who propogates that very idea.

I'm not sure what you mean Teri? "I do not believe for a minute that every person in this nation is suited to be running to the cause of the war." I'm not saying all of us should. I'm saying that everyone who is promoting, advocating or endorsing this war shouldn't A) go fight it if they are of age and healthy body or B) have children/grandchildren of such status.

I just think the good Mr. GF is highlighting the hypocrisy of say, a certain former Governor running for President, a certain sitting President and members of his cabinet.

"Good for the goose is good for the gander" (whatever a gander is).

And I also agree with Lawyer Mama - I smell glorious sarcasm.

Easy Teri... SMID and LM were right. That last bit WAS sarcasm... but not the rest.

I believe that the people that support this war should do their part... if they are of eligible age (up to age 41), they should enlist.

I think that people that support the war and are unwilling to put their own asses in the game, should be slapped across the face... and then challenged to a duel. Then again, those people are all cowards... they wouldn't fight anyway.

MElanie,

Supporting a soldier isn't the same as supporting the war.

I like Mitt Romney ... but he did mess up by saying that his kids are serving this country by helping to get him elected... not such a good thing to say to those parents who have children serving overseas.

He was forced to address that statement on the Fox News debate last night... As he should.

I don't know one person that likes or wants war. Who would?
It's horrible ... but I thank God we have volunteer Armed Forces and there are men & women that are choosing to serve our country ...

Me ... I am too too chickenshit ...
I couldn't go to Iraq or any war ... I would freak out ... I don't know how these guys/girls do it? My aunt was a flight nurse during the Korean war... she was a LT. COL. in the Air force... and the horrific stories she told...
I don't know how she did it...

My husband proudly served in the Air Force...during the first gulf war... I don't know how his mother handled it... I would be a mess if Casey had to go to war...

Mike thinks all men (and women if they choose) should serve at least 2 to 4 years for their country.

So, you're saying that people who support the war should be willing to fight? So if I am in support of the war, but don't go fight, it makes me not a real american? And how was that bit of sarcasm funny. TOTALLY lost on me. TOTALLY.

Fuck it.

Gunfighter said...

"So, you're saying that people who support the war should be willing to fight?"

Hell yes! If you think that invading a sovereign nation that wasn't threatening your country or it's allies is ok; if you think the destruction of a relatively stable society is ok; if you think the number of civilian deaths is ok; if you think that our own creation of this insurgency is ok; if you think the massive loss of Iraqi civlian life is ok; if you think the loss of nearly 4,000 dead American soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines is ok; if you think that the amount of money that we are throwing away on a a war that will have negative effects in the United States for a generatio or two is ok... then yes, I think you should be willing to fight, if you aren't too old.

You don't have to worry, Teri, you are too old... but those that aren't should stop cheering while OTHER people fight and die. It is despicable. It is beyond cowardice. It is shameful.

I don't care to hear any excuses about "other priorities" like Dick Cheney said about Vietnam. I don't want to hear about "getting me elected is serving the country" I don't want to hear any bullshit about I have kids, or I was already in the service, blah blah blah.

If you are old enough, put on a uniform, get a rifle, SHUT THE FUCK UP, and put your own ass on the line for what you believe.

"So if I am in support of the war, but don't go fight, it makes me not a real american?"

No. It makes you a hypocrite. It also makes you a physical and moral coward, if you are old enough to fight, but won't do it.

cathouse teri said...

Well I mainly don't have to worry, because I don't support the war. Or any war, for that matter. I was speaking hypothetically. But surely there are Americans who are misled into believing the war is acceptable. Granted, I don't understand that way of thinking, but they do exist. There are Americans who believe that the US is doing the right thing, even if it's wrong. But I don't think they should be compelling their children to go to war. Their children should be making that choice themselves.

Flower Child said...

Yeah SMID! You made my point about Romney's sons "serving". Hey, for added fun let's ask Rove et al to rerun those ads calling Max Cleland a coward. Maybe people will take notice - or not. Ugh.

Paul Champagne said...

I believe military service should be a pre-requisite before serving in national office or as a Governor. You can't ask people to lay down their lives for this country if you never took the chance.

cathouse teri said...

I agree with the Champagne fella. And you CERTAINLY should not be the Commander in Chief if you have never served!

How is that not a given?
