Crime and (no) Punishment

I suppose there are those that will defend that Croc-wearing idiot in the White House, for commuting the sentence of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, but I'm not one of them.

The current occupant of the White House has decided that the fines and probation imposed on Libby are enough of a punishment. It must be nice to have friends with that kind of juice.

Lewis Libby is a liar.

Lewis Libby is a criminal.

Lewis Libby is a convicted felon.

Why should I, or any other American feel any sympathy for Lewis Libby? Why shouldn't he have to serve his sentence? You can bet your ass that if I had obstructed justice and lied to the FBI in a criminal investigation, that I would have gone to prison... probably with a longer sentence.

I guess the message that the American people should take away from all of this is that crime is OK... unless you are poor, in which case you deserve to be in prison.

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised... this is a President that thinks that THIS guy...

Thanks, Mr. Bush, for reconfirming what I have always known about you.

You sir, are scum.

Couldn't agree more. I was so angry when I heard that Libby would get no time. My already little faith in this administration is waning by the minute.

Sheesh! You had to put up the croc picture again? Isn't once enough punishment?

I am behind you 100% on this GF. You've said it well. You will find no attempts at defending the idiot (any of the above mentioned) here.

This is so wrong -- I am seething. The man who presided over 152 executions in Texas commutes the sentence of a liar and a traitor the minute the judge says it's time to get locked up. But like you said, those dead men were poor.

Jeez this guy makes it hard for me to claim to be a Texan. In fact, over here he makes it hard to claim to be from the US. Here I am trying to raise my girls right, teach 'em to obey the laws (even if I think some are really stupid...), trying to instill some pride in their heritage, and this guy continues to demonstrate some of the worst things about America. No wonder so many fanatics in the world hate us. No wonder so many people think Americans are shallow hypocrites. GF, no wonder you feel like shooting things. Can you add your picture of the Prez from the blog to the collection for me? Give it a couple of extra shots! (But don't go getting yourself in any sort of trouble with the Secret Service, or should I say SS, types!)

I'm not pleased, but not surprised. I doubt there's much the pigfuckers in this administration could do anymore that would surprise me.

I think ALL politicians are corrupt and do crappy things, and that's including the Clintons.

We can spend all day griping about Bush, but we can spend all day griping about both of the Clintons.

Bill Clinton pardoned 16 TERRORISTS when he left office ... one of the terrorists was supposed to spent 75 years in prison ... he spent only 4 thanks to Clinton.

Have you seen the list of crooks that Clinton pardoned when he left office? Geez Louise.

All politicians all crooked ...
evey last one of them ...

they all have their own agenda ~ they all do whatever benefits THEM.
Democrats and Republicans alike.

I don't think this post was about Bill Clinton. It was about GWB. But, well, Bill, I'll let you address your own comments!

All I can say is great post. Like Janet, I can't say I was surprised about it though.

Terri,

Let's focus, Bill Clinton left the White House a long time ago. All of this is down to one man. The current President.

You can defend Bush by attacking Bill Clinton all you want, but it won't wash.

Oh, and please list, by name, the terrorists of whom you speak.

My conclusion stands, George Bush is scum.

FA,

I won't be shooting any pictures of anyone... that kind of thing is a serious felony. The Secret Service would take a dim viwew of it, and I'd wind up in prison... and since I'm just a blue collar kind of guy... there is no way in hell that Bush would commute MY sentence.

Watch, that asshole will pardon Lying Libby at the end of his term in office.

I'm I the only one who remembers that he said he wouldn't convert a jury sentence? That he respected juries? What, he also said there were WMDs, I'm sorry, I forgot, his word means nothing.

That was great! I really can't stand to look at this man any longer!

He is scum bucket that's for sure!

"On August 11, 1999 Clinton commuted the sentences of 16 members of FALN, a violent Puerto Rican nationalist group that set off 120 bombs in the United States mostly in New York City and Chicago, convicted for conspiracies to commit robbery, bomb-making, and sedition, as well as for firearms and explosives violations.[3] None of the 16 were convicted of bombings or any crime which injured another person, though they were sentenced with terms ranging from 35 to 105 years in prison for the conviction of conspiracy and sedition. Congress, however, recognizes that the FALN is responsible for “6 deaths and the permanent maiming of dozens of others, including law enforcement officials.” All of the 16 had served 19 years or longer in prison, which was a longer sentence than such crimes typically received, according to the White House.[citation needed] Clinton offered clemency, on condition that the prisoners renounce violence, at the appeal of 10 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, President Jimmy Carter, the cardinal of New York, and the archbishop of Puerto Rico. The commutation was opposed by U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons and criticized by many including former victims of FALN terrorist activities, the Fraternal Order of Police,[4] members of Congress, and Hillary Clinton in her campaign for Senator.[5] Congress condemned the action, with a vote of 95-2 in the Senate and 311-41 in the House.[6][7] The U.S. House Committee on Government Reform held an investigation on the matter, but the Justice Department prevented FBI officials from testifying.[8] President Clinton cited executive privilege for his refusal to turn over some documents to Congress related to his decision to offer clemency to members of the FALN terrorist group."

I got this info from a site off of Michelle Malkins site ... I can't remember the name of the site ...
I can go find out if you are interested.

I'm not defending Bush ... I don't care for Bush myself. I used to like Bush, though.

I'm just saying that they ALL do crappy things ... not just Bush.
Clinton pardoned 396 felons (from what I heard on the news.)

The do it on both sides.
Republicans and Democrats..
then each side has a fit when the other side does it.

Rather than monopolize your lovely space I posted a nice little interview with our current President when he was Governor of a certain state.

http://denyingsoccermom.blogspot.com/2007/07/my-job-is-to-enforce-law.html

The underlying message, I couldn't agree with you more Mr. GF that this president has a double standard - one for his friends and one for the rest of us. It saddens me when folks think he represent us, the American people. He doesn't.

Yeah, the Libby business sickens me. It's too bad Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have the week off because I'm sure they would have had a field day with this.

Teri,

Try to stay focsed here. This post wasn't about Bill Clinton and his deeds or misdeeds. It is about GW Bush, who subverts the legal system for his friends and loyalists.

That makes him beneath contempt.

Again, attempting to defend Bush by bashing Clinton is the worst kind of argument... please try to stay on topic... better yet, post lengthy diatribes about Bill Clinton on your own blog.

Regarding the FALN members you mentioned... What you posted suggested that many of those people had served lengthy parts of their sentences... Maybe your friend Dubya should have let Libby go to jail for a while before he commuted his sentence, eh?

But, you don't really think lying to the FBI is a crime... unless the liar is a "liberal", right?

Janet Kincaid said...

I'm just as miffed as the next thinking American, but come on. Are you seriously surprised? We all knew George would do this. And no doubt, that was Dick's hand up Georgie's back, manipulating him again. If anyone really believed the President would participate in punishing the person who leaked Valerie Plame's name to the press, they were far too optimistic. Sorry, but you could see this pardon coming even before an indictment was handed down. (Boy, Patrick Fitzgerald must be fuming right now.)

This presidency is a farce and the Lewis Libby debacle is just further evidence of how badly it's fallen.

Janet Kincaid said...

Oops. I misspoke. That should have said, "you could see this commutation coming" and, I would add, pardon. Because let's face it, folks, that's coming too. It's just a matter of time.

Gunfighter said...

Oh, I saw it coming, Janet... but it doesn't change my level of disgust.
